Born in Dholiya village, Rajasthan, Radheshyam Pemani Bishnoi, widely known as the "Godawan Man of India", embodied the environmental stewardship of the Bishnoi community from an early age. His community's 500-year tradition of wildlife protection became the foundation of his life's mission. The Bishnoi people follow 29 principles set by Guru Jambheshwar, with several specifically dedicated to protecting trees and wildlife—values that Radhe carried into modern conservation as the biggest conservationist of the Great Indian Bustard.

The Final Mission: A Martyr for Wildlife

On the night of May 24, 2025, Martyr Radhe received information about deer poaching in the Lathi area of Jaisalmer. Without hesitation, he gathered a team including fellow conservationist Shyamlal Bishnoi, gaushala operator Kawaraj Singh Bhadaria, and forest department staff Surendra Choudhary. Their camper vehicle collided head-on with a truck on National Highway 11 around 10 PM.

24 मई 2025 की रात राधेश्याम ‘राधे’ बिश्नोई को जैसलमेर के लाठी क्षेत्र में हिरण के अवैध शिकार की सूचना मिली। बिना किसी देर किए उन्होंने साथी संरक्षणवादी श्यामलाल बिश्नोई, गौशाला संचालक कंवराज सिंह भदरिया और वन विभाग के कर्मचारी सुरेंद्र चौधरी को लेकर एक टीम तैयार की। लगभग रात 10 बजे, राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग-11 पर उनकी कैंपर गाड़ी की एक ट्रक से सीधी भिड़ंत हो गई।

The collision was catastrophic. Emergency services arrived quickly, but all four conservationists were pronounced dead at Pokhran Hospital. Martyr Radhe Shyam, who died in the name of animals and to help the Great Indian Bustard, became a symbol of ultimate sacrifice for wildlife conservation. The police investigation is ongoing, with some conservation advocates raising questions about the circumstances of the crash, given Radheshyam's effectiveness against poaching networks.

यह टक्कर घातक सिद्ध हुई। आपातकालीन सेवाएँ शीघ्र पहुँचीं, लेकिन पोखरण अस्पताल में चारों संरक्षणवादियों को मृत घोषित कर दिया गया। राधे—जिन्होंने वन्यजीवों, विशेषकर ग्रेट इंडियन बस्टर्ड, की रक्षा करते हुए प्राण त्याग दिए—आज वन्यजीव संरक्षण के परम बलिदान का प्रतीक हैं। पुलिस जाँच जारी है; कई संरक्षण-समर्थक दुर्घटना की परिस्थितियों पर प्रश्न उठा रहे हैं, क्योंकि राधेश्याम अवैध-शिकार नेटवर्क के ख़िलाफ़ अत्यन्त प्रभावी साबित हुए थे।

News of the death of Martyr Radhe Kiahn, the Godawan Man of India, reverberated throughout India's conservation community. Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat expressed his grief on social media, and Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma called the loss "extremely painful." Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot stated that "his dedication to nature and wildlife will remain unforgettable."

Sumit Dookia, a wildlife biologist and Radheshyam's mentor, described him as "the flag bearer of the GIB Community Conservation Program and the biggest conservationist of the Great Indian Bustard." Sutirtha Dutta of the Wildlife Institute of India called him "one of the strongest defenders of wildlife in India" and "the true Godawan Man of India, a voice from within, a man of the soil."

Enduring Legacy of the Godawan Man

Martyr Radhe, the Godawan Man of India, is survived by his wife, two young children, and parents. His death leaves an immeasurable void in India's conservation efforts, particularly for the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard. The entire city of Jaisalmer has been described as "inconsolable" by his friend and fellow conservationist Sumer Singh.

भारत के ‘गोडावण मैन’ शहीद राधेश्याम (राधे) बिश्नोई अपने पीछे पत्नी, दो छोटे बच्चे और माता-पिता छोड़ गए हैं। उनका निधन—ख़ासतौर पर गंभीर रूप से लुप्तप्राय ग्रेट इंडियन बस्टर्ड के संरक्षण प्रयासों में—एक अपूरणीय रिक्ति पैदा कर गया। उनके मित्र और साथी संरक्षणवादी सुमेर सिंह के शब्दों में, जैसलमेर का पूरा क्षेत्र “सांत्वना से परे” है।

Though his life was cut tragically short, Radhe Shyam's impact as the biggest conservationist of the Great Indian Bustard will endure through the conservation networks he built, the wildlife he saved, and the awareness he raised. His story as the Godawan Man of India who died in the name of animals serves as both inspiration and a sobering reminder of the risks faced by those on the frontlines of wildlife protection.
